What Can We Learn from Psalm 27:1?
Bible study week 7 and review of week 6
Dear friends,
We are into week seven of studying a verse a week. We try to memorize. Look at background and references. We ask God questions. We listen. We pray. Join us at Facebook Growing through God’s Word.
You will find this week’s verse at the end of this post.
Last week we studied Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life - whom shall I be afraid? (NIV)
This was done from memory!!
Such an impactful week with this scripture. It started before I read the scripture. On Sunday I watched two online messages. Both were about Light. Both were different. I wrote a little about it at Let’s Shine Out the Light.
But on Thursday, we were to pray and listen.
I wrote:
Connect with God. Must be still to listen.
I’ll confess I’m struggling with the “being still” part. If you have any ideas I would love to hear from you.
I did hear two questions:
What are things that snuff out or lower the light in me?
What can brighten the light?
So what snuffs out the light in me?
indifference, anger, tiredness, too much into the world, gossip, busyness, emotions, fear, self-will, stubbornness.
What can brighten the light?
friends, family, reading a good book, Bible, prayer, quiet reflection time, exercise, morning pages, journalling
Another question I heard was:
Where can I shine?
I’m still listening for an answer to this one. Some ideas:
prayer walks
taking time to stop and talk to those I meet
online comments - encouragement
my paintings
my reflections on social media and in my books
Quick fact:
Light travels at 670 million mph and so it can drive out darkness instantly.
It occupies the space. Darkness vanishes. It retreats!!
May I challenge you this week to look to the Light? The more Light you see the further darkness will travel away from you.
May I pray for you and me?
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our Light. Shine on us. Shine on our path. Show us the goodness, kindness and love that You have. And then, we will be able to reflect that to others. Let’s banish the darkness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
We will be studying Psalm 46:1 this week.
See you in Facebook. Let’s have lots of discussion this week.
Blessings,
Janis
I’ll leave you with a wonderful song. It focuses on God being our stronghold, our strong tower.
Blessed Be the Name of the Lord (The Lord is a Strong Tower)
The book of this week is Growing through God’s Word. I actually have two books. It is a series but only two so far. May I get time to write more.

Reviews
Personal anecdotes on the topic, backed by Scripture verses, illustrations from the author's own Bible, challenges, and questions to think about involve the reader on many levels.. I believe these short study topics can be returned to time and again to gain more insight into our walk with God. I appreciated the resources listed at the end to enable me to go deeper into the topics to grow deeper in my relationship with God.
Jan adds a personal touch by offering to pray for us, the readers, at the end of each section. A book I would recommend having and using for personal Bible study and reflection. Carol Harrison , inspirational speaker, published author and storyteller.
