How to Pray Using Scripture
Read, contemplate, pray and learn
Hi friends,
For the month of July I have been reading one verse a day on the topic of wonder. I try different versions of the verse. I look up commentaries. I think. I contemplate. I ask God what this means to my life.
Then I write a prayer. I’ve been calling this “A Prayer a Day” in Growing through God’s Word on Facebook.
Here is a sample from July 24.
Jesus, full of wonder
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Hebrews 1:3, NIV)
The Son is the dazzling radiance of God’s splendor, the exact expression of God’s true nature — his mirror image! He holds the universe together and expands it by the mighty power of his spoken word. He accomplished for us the complete cleansing of sins, and then took his seat on the highest throne at the right hand of the majestic One. (Hebrews 1:3, TPT)
Additional scriptures
I found three more scriptures around the same theme.
John 1 talks about the Word of God – Jesus in the flesh.
In the beginning the Living Expression was already there. And the Living Expression was with God, yet fully God. They were together — face-to-face, in the very beginning. And through his creative inspiration this Living Expression made all things, for nothing has existence apart from him! (John 1:1–3, TPT)
Psalm 33:6 talks God speaking by his Spirit-wind command and forming creation.
All he had to do was speak by his Spirit-Wind command, and God created the heavenlies. Filled with galaxies and stars, the vast cosmos he wonderfully made. (Psalm 33:6, TPT)
Isaiah 44:24 says God is the Maker of all things.
This is what the Lord says — your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself. (Isaiah 44:24, NIV)
Pause to listen
I know God is the Creator of all things. But this also is Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I love reading that Jesus is “the exact expression of God’s true nature — his mirror image!” I can picture that. Can you?
Write a prayer
Heavenly Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, You created the universe from nothing. We learn through Jesus. He is God’s presence in the flesh. United in One. Powerful. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Today is a very shortened version of my Super Simple Bible Study Journal.
How do you learn God’s Word?
May I pray for you?
Blessings,
Janis

Thank you so much.
God showed me this S.I.M.P.L.E. Method many years ago. I’ve taught it to many people. Finally I made a journal to sell. Then I published a Super Simple Bible Journal for everyday study.
It also helps me memorize scripture. I’ve also read through the Bible several times so it’s becoming more familiar and I can think through the context easier.
Great article. Your approach of contemplating, praying, and journaling each verse is a wonderful way to deepen our understanding of God's Word. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.
